Letter in support of refugee protection in Bulgaria

Letter in support of refugee protection in Bulgaria

The IRF Community and Northern Lights Aid circulated a letter urging Bulgarian authorities to uphold their legal and human rights obligations under national, European, and international laws to ensure the right to asylum for 103 members of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light. This group, fleeing persecution in countries such as Algeria, Iran, Iraq, and others, has gathered in Turkey but does not feel safe to seek asylum there due to documented violations of religious freedoms and the criminalization of blasphemy. The Ahmadis face severe threats, including arrests, imprisonment, and violent attacks, due to their beliefs, which have been labeled heretical. The group plans to present themselves at the Kapikule border crossing between Turkey and Bulgaria to request asylum. The letter calls on Bulgarian authorities to honor their obligations under the Law on Asylum and Refugees, the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, and other legal frameworks to register and assess these asylum claims individually. It also highlights that crossing the border to seek asylum is not a criminal offense under Bulgarian law. The letter emphasizes the group's well-founded fear of persecution and calls for their applications to be treated in accordance with human rights laws.
