Letter in Support of Intervention in Unjust Trial of 41 Religious Individuals in Turkey

Letter in Support of intervention in unjust trial of 41 Religious INdividuals in turkey

SIGNATURE COUNT: 130

The IRF Community is circulating a letter that supports intervention in the upcoming trial of 41 individuals, including young women, university students, and minors, at the Istanbul 24th High Criminal Court. This trial is scheduled for February 18, 2025, with individuals facing up to 15 years in prison. These individuals face anti-terror charges, with allegations ranging from reading the Qur'an, praying, attending Ramadan iftars, and participating in community activities. In addition to the blatant misuse of anti-terror laws, this letter highlights the inhumane treatment of detainees. There have been reports of strip-searches while in custody, violating Turkey's obligations under international law. Harsh prison conditions also pose health risks, especially to two detainees who have significant pre-existing conditions.

This letter calls for the release of the six remaining pretrial detainees, the condemnation of the misuse of anti-terror laws to suppress religious expression, and requesting international oversight to ensure compliance with global human rights standards.
