Letter in support of election reform in Bangladesh

The IRF Community and Alliance for Democratic Justice circulated a letter urging the U.S. President to take urgent action against the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh, citing widespread human rights abuses, political repression, and the stifling of free expression. Since Hasina's rise to power in 2009, the government has been accused of torturing, imprisoning, and killing opposition figures, journalists, and activists. Human rights organizations have condemned the regime for extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and the suppression of religious minorities, particularly Hindus. Despite international sanctions, the government’s abuses have intensified, and the upcoming elections are seen as highly unlikely to be free or fair. The letter calls for stronger measures, including stricter sanctions, banning law enforcement personnel from UN Peacekeeping Missions, and ensuring a neutral government for conducting free elections. The signatories appeal to the President's commitment to human rights and the rule of law.
