Letter in Support of Nigeria CPC Recommendation

Letter in Support of Nigeria CPC Recommendation

The IRF Community and Africa Working Group circulated a letter, addressed to Congressman John James and Congresswoman Sara Jacobs, expressing concerns regarding the human rights and religious freedom situation in Nigeria. It highlights the recommendation by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) due to events in 2022. The letter supports two initiatives: granting Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Special Student Relief to Nigeria, and passing House Resolution 82 (H.Res82), which calls for Nigeria's CPC designation and the appointment of a Special Envoy for Nigeria and the Lake Chad region. The authors also suggest amendments to H.Res82, including the case of Rhoda Ya’u Jatau, who was arrested for sharing a video criticizing the murder of Deborah Yakubu, and advocating for the release of other religious prisoners of conscience. The letter urges the recipients to support these efforts by sending a letter to the Department of Homeland Security endorsing TPS for Nigeria and passing H.Res82 with the proposed amendments. It emphasizes the importance of these actions to address Nigeria’s human rights and security issues.
