Letter in support of temporary protected status and special student relief designations for nigerian nationals

The IRF Community and Africa Working Group circulated a letter emphasizing the urgent need for the U.S. government to designate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or Deferred Enforced Departure (DED), along with Special Student Relief (SSR), for Nigerian nationals in response to ongoing armed conflicts and extraordinary conditions in Nigeria. It highlights widespread violence from terrorist groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP, displacement of over 6.5 million people, severe food insecurity, gender-based violence, and other crises, including flooding and disease outbreaks. The letter argues that returning Nigerians to such conditions would endanger their safety and requests an 18-month TPS or DED designation with SSR benefits to safeguard vulnerable populations while aligning with U.S. humanitarian and foreign policy goals.
